Social work has gradually developed and regained its formal recognition since the 1980s in the People's Republic of China. Because of its unique social, cultural, and political contexts, the professionalization of social work in China has to struggle within tensions from three domains: the professional domain, the political domain, and the market domain. Tensions within these three domains interact with one another dynamically in shaping the current and future development of social work in China.
