This paper provides a brief historical sketch of the development of social work in selected countries in Asia. The purpose is not to provide an exhaustive historical account but to highlight common influences such as the spread of Christianity, the Colonial legacy, the penetration of Confucian teaching in society, Communist ideology and the impact of globalization. It concludes by highlighting emerging trends in the conceptualization and practice of social work.
