Summary, etc 本書主要選錄的劇本為元雜劇十種，其中有關漢卿《單刀會》、《竇娥冤》、《蝴蝶夢》三種，馬致遠《漢宮秋》、《薦福碑》二種，白樸《牆頭馬上》、康進之《李逵負荊》、鄭光祖《倩女離魂》、無名氏《貨郎旦》各一種，以及王實甫《西廂記》錄二折。明院本選取李開先的《打啞禪》。明清雜劇選取四種，有王九思《中山狼》、沈璟《乜縣佐竟日昏眠》、陳與郊《文姬入塞》、楊潮觀《偷桃捉住東方朔》各一種。明清傳奇選四種，其中洪昇《長生殿》全本，高明《琵琶記》、湯顯祖《牡丹亭》各錄二出，孔尚任《桃花扇》一出。清皮黃則選取無名氏的《霸王別姬》一種。

　　作者在劇本選取上特別留心版本的古老與通行，對曲文的標點注意到正襯與句式的明析，於典故的出處亦加以詳細精審的注釋。在每劇之前都有題解，說明本事根源、諸家評論與作者介紹，每折之後更進一步說明該折的關目排場、聯套格律與曲辭賓白。對於選修戲曲課程的學生及想要研究中國古典戲劇的人而言，本書可說是一部最實用的戲劇選本。
