Summary, etc 本書是以大航海時代為背景，針對十六世紀至十九世紀基督教(天主教)傳入越車的過程和遭遇，以及越車執政當局的回應作為研究重心。當時越南分裂為南北政權：北部以昇龍(河內)為京師，西方人稱東京(Tonkin)是傳統王朝所在；中南部以順化為京城，西方人稱為交阯支那(Cochinchina)或稱廣南。雙方爭戰不休，為了爭取對外貿易及取得武器，對基督教的政策時而寬鬆時而緊縮。越南於 1802 年再次統一，及至第二代皇帝因為禮儀之爭，對基督教採取嚴厲政策，殺戮傳教士和信徒之事件，時有所聞。而傳教士甘冒風險偷渡入境，為推動傳教事業不惜犧牲生命，當時傳教士的殉教精神轉化為傳教者的桂冠，贏得信徒的擁戴與歌頌。法國亦藉口保護傳教士而入侵越南，越南最終淪為法國殖民地，基督教開始全面發展。
