Social workers are often the health care professionals faced with confronting family denial of medical prognosis, physician resistance with transition to palliative or hospice care, and administrative pressure regarding patient flow. Reisch (2012) reported that in the current complex and confusing health care environment, social workers face both new and historical ethical and practical issues. Being sandwiched between resource management concerns and the psychosocial needs of the terminally ill is a tough practice challenge for the hospital-based social worker.
